Text 18 Nov On the cheap

I need boots, always. Historically, I tend to work fast and dirty when it comes to boot purchases, choosing to buy cheap, trendy styles that last through the season and then get tossed. However, I feel that it’s time to abandon that shopping strategy, up my game, and start my portfolio of so-called “investment pieces”. Cool, so I drop serious ducats on a pair of awesome, well-crafted boots that are so fabulous that I will choose to be buried in them, and they will still be so so good that years later my descendants will see photos of me wearing them, exhume my bones and pry them from my skeletal feet.

Sounds great, right? But there’s a problem. I have wide feet and big calves so I’m limited in my shopping choices, and usually end up having to decide between this:

put that garbage away

or this:

'salright...

But I’m not sure how long my clown stripper phase will last and I’m not big on velour footwear so… sadface. I guess I’ll have to keep rocking the budget kicks until I meet my dream shoe.

Text 18 Nov And… Scene!

Last night, I saw Mike Doughty perform with his band fantastic at the 930 Club. The show was great, and I adored the opening act Moon Hooch, blah blah blah music… that’s not the point.

What really got me was the way Mr. Doughty ran that room. He was charming and affable and really demonstrated the skill-set a seasoned road musician develops for controlling a crowd. He soothed the aging, drunken frat-boys with an indulgent hand while moving the show along at his own pace, he really took command and played a set that allowed for audience requests while following a path that he professed to have scientifically formulated to “get everyone in [the] room laid.” It was pretty dope and it got me thinking.

How do you work a room? Is this a learned skill, or an innate gift? Do you have to train in the waterfall? Or maybe just skim the Post for “topics!” and keep it moving? I think I’ll have to design an experiment to get to the bottom of this. Calling for socially anxious volunteers…
